I love to eat. I've always been chubby since I could remember. A common remark back when I was 4 or 5 was "Zeny, napabayaan ang anak mo sa kusina." Take note, this is said with a pinch on my arm. Ouch! I've been on different diets for a week or so but it never succeeds. Hardly. I'd choose dessert over a main course.
Metro Manila is just mushrooming with good restaurants and here are my favorite places.
1. Heat - This posh restaurant in Edsa Shangri-la tops the list. The buffet offers different cuisines and the choices are endless. There's my favorite sashimi bar with fresh salmon that's soft and fresh to the bite. Seasoned with soy sauce and wasabi, it's plate after plate of my favorite salmon sashimi. The dessert is also worth the trip to Heat. I love their Teppanyaki Ice Cream. Choose from the different ice cream flavors like chocolate, vanilla and fill it with M&Ms, Oreo, mallows and nuts. The ice cream is mixed with the fillings on this chilled marble top and it's a fun sight. A trip to the dentist is a must after the sugar boost.
2. Gloria Maris Shabu Shabu - I had my first try of their tasty shabu shabu in Gloria Maris Greenhills. Choose from a variety of meat, seafoods and vegetables. You can also cook these in your choice flavored soup stock and not to forget their House Sauce. Oooh, I can't wait for my next trip to dip those fish balls in my peanuty sauce with garlic and sate.
3. JT Manukan - You can find the best chicken inasal along Gilmore. Notwithstanding the heat, dust and smokebelchers, eating al fresco is the way to go to enjoy my grilled chicken, liver with my garlic fried rice. The sauce is very simple - soy sauce, a little vinegar, kalamansi and siling labuyo.
4. Wan Chai Tea House - Hey dimsum partner! What do I love to eat? I'm such a dimsum addict whether during the late afternoon or evenings. I love Wan Chai's chicken feet, raddish cake (it has to be toasted) and shrimp rice roll seasoned with soy sauce. Wait, wait. I think I see my dimsum partner preparing our favorite sauce - soy sauce combined with kalamsi and chili sauce. Let's eat. Where are my chopsticks?
5. Terry's Gourmet Selection - Terry's offers the best platters with a selection of cheeses, cold cuts and jamon serrano. I enjoy my meal with red or white wine. Another favorite at this restaurant are their gambas cooked with crispy garlic chips and their creamy lengua. It's tender and juicy.
6. Banana Leaf - I'm an Asian food fanatic. I'm comforted by Thai, Singaporean and Malaysian food. I'm into curries and pad thais (not too spicy though) and green papaya salads. One appetizer that I never fail to order is Banana Leaf's roti kanai with curry sauce. I like its thin, light and crisp taste. I eat roti kanai with my hands and this is fun when shared with friends.
7. Mangan - My trip to Robinson's Place will never be complete without my pansit luglog at this Kapampangan restaurant. Heaven! While I enjoy my kamias topped luglog, I partner this with sago't gulaman. For the main course, the kare kare is a treat with its thick peanut based soup and meaty ox tail with bagoong.
8. Cibo - I'm not really into pastas. My trip to this Italian restaurant is usually for my paninis with potato chip sidings. Whatever the fillings are, I love the toasted bread. Every bite is a discovery of how the different flavors play with your sense of taste.
9. Florabel - I love the ambiance, music and the crowd. The food is oohlala. Try their scallop appetizer. It's creamy and the scallop is fresh and really tender. The sea bass is a good choice too. Same with their burger. I've tried their creme bulee and it's fantastic. I also had my balled ice cream crusted with chopped almonds. Whether it's a lunch meeting or a dinner date, Florabel it is for me.
10. Sincerity - This old Chinese restaurant can be found along Nueva in Binondo. It's popular fried chicken draws customers from as far as Valenzuela. The chicken is dipped in batter and seasoned with salt and pepper and cooked over high heat. The chicken skin is so crispy and flavorful that you don't even need ketchup. Ketchup pleaaaaaaaaaaaase Luis. I'll choose Sincerity over Jollibee's Chickenjoy or KFC anytime.
I think it's time to put my mind on a diet too. Till my next food trip. Tata.
